Scrabble Q Words Without U — Every Valid Word Listed
The Q tile is worth 10 points in Scrabble but creates anxiety for most players who only know QU- words. The reality is that several valid Scrabble words use Q without U, and knowing them transforms the Q from a feared tile into an opportunity.
The Essential Q-Without-U Words
QI (11 points) is the most important word in any serious Scrabble player's vocabulary. Pronounced "chee," it refers to the life force in traditional Chinese philosophy. Two letters, eleven points, can be played anywhere there is a valid hook. This word alone justifies learning the Q-without-U list.
Longer Q-Without-U Words
QOPH or QAPH (16 points) is a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. QANAT (14 points) is an ancient underground irrigation channel system used in the Middle East and Central Asia. QIGONG (18 points) is a Chinese breathing and movement practice similar to tai chi. QINTAR (15 points) is a monetary unit of Albania equal to 1/100 of a lek.
The QWERTY Special Case
QWERTY (21 points) is valid in Scrabble as a noun referring to the standard keyboard layout. It requires W and Y in addition to Q, but does not need U. At 21 points for a 6-letter word, it is one of the most efficient Q plays available when the letters are present.
Playing Q Words Strategically
Draw Q from the bag and immediately check the board for any I next to a vowel-less position where QI fits. Three-letter extensions of QI using a front hook (if the word already played is QI, you can build QOPH or QADI onto it) create additional plays from your Q investment.
