Mahjong Solitaire Strategy Guide — How to Win More Games
Mahjong solitaire (also called Shanghai solitaire) is a tile-matching game where the goal is to clear all 144 tiles by matching pairs. Not every layout is winnable, but skilled players can win far more games than chance alone by following strategic principles.
The First Priority: Free the Buried Tiles
Your primary goal in any Mahjong game is to unblock buried tiles before you run out of matches. Identify which tiles are stacked deepest in the layout and work backward from them. If a tile is under three layers, you need to clear three matches just to access it. Prioritize creating access paths.
Match Higher First When Possible
When you have a choice between matching tiles at different heights, generally match the higher tiles first. Removing upper layers reveals more options and prevents situations where a critical lower tile cannot be accessed.
Avoid Matching Your Last Pair
Before matching any pair, confirm you are not matching your only accessible pair of that tile type. If you match the last two accessible tiles of a type that are needed to free other tiles, you will create an unwinnable state. Check that at least two more tiles of that type are still accessible or will become accessible.
When to Use Undo
Undo strategically, not reactively. Do not undo after every move to try infinite combinations. Instead, use undo when you recognize a specific mistake: you matched a pair that blocked a critical path, or you have identified a better sequence in retrospect.
